Make sure you read the ruler from left to right. Ranging from 1 inch to 1/16 of an inch, the lines decrease in size as the unit of measurement does. The longer the line on the surface of the ruler, the bigger the measurement is. These typically aren’t labeled but might be on some rulers (in which case you’d see numbers such as 1 1/2 in, 2 1/2 in, etc.). The second-biggest unit on a ruler is the 1/2 inch, which is represented by the second-longest line. The decimal part of 0.005 is more than 0 and less than 0.0625. Looking at the table above, we can locate where the decimal part of 0.005 fits. Therefore, 0.005 is located between 0 inches and 1 inch on the ruler. In the drawing below, we show a ruler with graduations or marks of 0.1 (1/10) and 0.01 (1/100). For example, you measure a button and the edge ends on the fifth line right between the 1 and 2 centimeter marks. There are a total of 60 of these marks on a 30 cm ruler.
